Oklahoma BPA's State Officer Team recently attended CareerTech University (CTU) 2026, a three-day leadership experience that brought together student leaders from all CareerTech student organizations. During the event, officers strengthened their leadership skills, built lasting relationships, and collaborated on plans for the upcoming Fall Leadership Conference and State Leadership Conference.
Throughout CTU, participants engaged in workshops focused on crucial conversations, building trust, personal growth, and effective teamwork. Officers also had the opportunity to network with members from other CareerTech Student Organizations (CTSOs), including FFA, TSA, DECA, FCCLA, SkillsUSA, and HOSA, gaining valuable perspectives on leadership and service.
State Reporter Gunnar Tignor left CTU with a greater understanding of his role and responsibilities within BPA. His goal as a state officer is to increase awareness of BPA across Oklahoma, and he found the sessions on communication and crucial conversations especially impactful.
State Parliamentarian Buddy Abney appreciated the organization and professionalism of the event. He was particularly impressed by speakers Kelly Barnes and Jason Wetzler and noted how effectively they engaged audiences through their presentation techniques.
State Secretary Isabella Gonzalez arrived at CTU unsure of what to expect, but the experience quickly became one of her favorite leadership opportunities. She enjoyed meeting student leaders from other CTSOs and left feeling more confident and prepared to serve BPA members across the state.
Secondary State Vice President Presley Phillips described CTU as a transformative experience. Through leadership workshops, networking opportunities, and meaningful conversations with fellow officers, she gained a deeper understanding of servant leadership and the value of collaboration.
Post-secondary State Vice President Will McClure enjoyed learning alongside student leaders from across Oklahoma. From leadership development sessions to team-building activities, he felt the experience strengthened both the officer team and their vision for BPA's future.
State Historian Jamill “Jay” Valle found the experience to be far different from what he expected—in the best way possible. He quickly felt at home among his fellow officers and appreciated the strong sense of community fostered throughout the event.
State President Braxton Runyan felt BPA was well represented throughout CTU. One of his biggest takeaways was learning how to navigate crucial conversations effectively while maintaining positive relationships. He also enjoyed collaborating with members of other CTSOs through creative and engaging activities.
As a team, Oklahoma BPA state officers returned from CTU with stronger relationships, new leadership skills, and a renewed commitment to serving members across the state. The lessons learned and connections made during this experience will help guide the team throughout the year as they prepare for upcoming conferences and initiatives. We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead and meeting many members across the state.
